Lateral thinking Question 1
Question :
There is a man who lives on the top floor of a very tall building. Everyday he gets the elevator down to the ground floor to leave the building to go to work. Upon returning from work though, he can only travel half way up in the lift and has to walk the rest of the way unless it's raining! Why?
Although there are many possible solutions which fit the initial conditions, only the canonical answer is truly satisfying.

He was too short to press the level he wanted to go and when it is raining, he has an umbrella to help him press the level he wanted to go. the solution is that he always bring a long stick with him.

ReplyDeleteHe's a short man and he cannot press the button of the top floor but can for the bottom floor. When it's raining, he's carrying an unbrella. He's using his umbrella to help him to press the button of the top floor.
ReplyDeleteIt is because the man is very short, so he cannot reach the top button on the lift when he returns from work. On rainy days, he can reach the button with the help of his umbrella.

Upon returning from work, he is too short to press the upper button to the top floor and could only travel up half way up in the lift and had to take the stairs. When it is raining , he will have a umbrella and could use it to press the upper button to the top floor.

The man is too short to press the top floor's button in the lift , but is able to press the ground floor's button in the lift . He does not need to travel half way up in the lift when it is raining because the man has an umbrella . He uses the tip of the umbrella to press the top floor's button , which is why he is able to reach the top floor on rainy days .
ReplyDeleteThe man is very short, just tall enough to press only the lower buttons in the lift. So when he is going to the bottom floor he can reach and press the bottom button in the lift to bring the lift to the bottom floor. But when going home, he isn't tall enough to press the top button to go to the top floor. So he can only press the lower buttons, and he has to get out when he reaches that floor and walk the rest of the way. But when it is raining he has his umbrella with him and can use it to reach up and press the higher buttons on the lift.

The man is very short. So, if he wants to get to the ground floor, he can easily press the lowest buttom. However, if he wants to get to the highest storey, he can only press the highest button he can reach and needs to climb up the staircase for the remaining storeys. If it is raining, he will have an umbrella with him and he can simply use it to press the highest button.

Because the man is very short, he cannot reach the button for the tallest level of the building and when its raining he will be able to use his umbrella to reach for his level which is the highest

The man is too short. He can press the button for the first floor when he goes to work as it is at the bottom. But when he comes home, he cannot reach the button for the top floor so he presses the highest button that he can reach and then he must walk the rest of the way up.When it is raining, he can use his umbrella to reach the button for the top floor.

He is very short , and can only reach the middle floor button , so he can only press the button of the top floor with the help of his umbrella , which he only needs if it rains . Thus , he must walk halfway up the building unless it rains .

the man is too short to press the floor he is living at but when it is raining he need to take an umbrella out in to the open and when he came back he can use the umbrella to press the button.

ReplyDeleteThe man is tall enough to press the bottom button to get to the first floor for work,but is too short to press the top button to get back home.Therefore the man can only press the button of the highest floor which he can,which is the middle of the building.Only if it is raining,when a lot of people are bound to be in the building to help him,will he be able to reach the top floor without stopping halfway and having to walk the rest of the way up.

He walks up for the sake of exercising to lose weight.The stairs is at the side of the flat and he would get wet while going up the stairs.Thus,he takes the elevator up to his home if it is raining to avoid getting wet.

ReplyDeleteThe button in the lift to the ground floor is at the very bottom while the button in thelift to the top floor is at the very top. So, the man has to travel halfway up in the lift and walk the rest of the way as he is a dwarf and cannot reach the top button of the lift.
ReplyDeleteThere is a hole on top of the elevator.When it rains water seeps through and the lift stops at whatever floor it is at.Therefore when he returns from work,he have to walk up the stairs.In the mornings when he go to work,it does not rain,water does not seeps through and he can leave the building without having to walk up the stairs.
ReplyDeleteWhen the man comes home, he goes up the neighbouring building, which is twice as high as the building he is living in, halfway up. He meets his parents there. There is an unsheltered bridge linking that building to the top floor of the building he is in. After meeting his parents, he walks via the bridge to his home. When it rains, he goes straight home.
